What is Die-Cutting?
Die-cutting is a manufacturing process used to cut precise shapes and gaskets out of various materials. Pres-On offers several different die-cutting services including flatbed and rotary die-cutting. Both of these die-cutting processes require a specialized tool called a die, which is a custom sharp-edged blade or blades that cut the material into the desired shape. The die is fastened to the machine and cuts the material as it passes through. The die can be custom-made to produce specific shapes, such as gaskets, parts, or other intricate designs.
Traditional die-cutting methods are most effective for high-volume, repetitive production runs due to the initial investment needed to acquire the die.

- Consistent and repeatable results
Die-Cutting Capabilities
Pres-On offers several types of die-cutting services. Two of the most common types of die-cutting methods Pres-On offers are flatbed and rotary die cutting. Although technically an alternative to traditional die-cutting, Pres-On considers CNC cutting as one of its die-cutting services. CNC cutting offer the same results as die-cutting without the need for a die. Pres-On also has the ability to cut label stock.
In addition to cutting, Pres-On die-cutting services can also perform kiss-cutting and perforating. Kiss-cuts are similar to die-cuts except a kiss cut leaves the liner paper in tack. This keeps the custom cut gaskets and shapes on an intact roll instead of separate die cut pieces. Moreover, perforating creates small holes or dotted lines and is commonly used by Pres-On customers when the material has to fold at a specific place.
CNC Precision Cutting
CNC cutting, or digital cutting, uses a CNC machine to cut through foam and other materials. A CNC machine is excellent for cutting intricate designs and dense materials such as solid rubber, EPDM, PVC Foam and Viton. It provides a cost-effective solution for many projects as it negates the need for expensive tooling and can be programmed to utilize the full width of expensive materials to reduce waste.
To run a CNC Machine an operator would instruct the machine by uploading a CAD or DXF file. If you can not provide a file, our in-house engineering team can assist in making CAD and DXF files for a nominal fee. The digital cutting machine then reads the file and uses the high-frequency vibration of a blade to create a smooth and precise cut.
The advantage of CNC die-cutting is its versatility and precision. It can produce unique designs without a die and can cut much larger shapes. Because no die is required, CNC custom cutting is ideal for rapid prototyping. Furthermore, Pres-On’s custom CNC cutting has excellent dimensional tolerances held for exacting specifications. Our newest machine can hold tolerances up to .005″ on various materials.
Lead times for CNC cut orders, vary by quantity, materials, and complexity but most jobs can be shipped in 5-10 working days from order.
Rotary Die-Cutting
Rotary die-cutting is one of the most popular and versatile methods of die-cutting. This process uses a cylinder-shaped die to cut, crease, and perforate our adhesive backed products. This method is well suited for large scale production runs, with the ability to quickly and easily produce high volume of parts without sacrificing quality.
Rotary die-cutting is capable of producing fully customized parts with complex shapes, intricate details, and precise tolerances. Additionally, the cylinders used in rotary die-cutting can be replaced relatively quickly and easily when changing between different die designs.
Pres-On can accommodate a variety of thin-gauge materials. Our rotary die-cutting machines can run material with a maximum thickness of 1/4 inches. The roll or sheet can be from 1/2 inches to up to 16 inches in width.
Kiss-Cutting
Kiss-cutting is a die-cutting process that is used to cut a specific shape without cutting all the way through. This method is great for producing custom shapes while making use of as much of the material as possible. A vast majority of Pres-On custom made adhesive backed products are made with the kiss-cut method.
Furthermore, this kiss-cut method is used to create our popular cork or foam separator pads for the glass and window industry. Additionally, Pres-On’s kiss-cut shapes and parts can be removed from their backing with minimal effort.
Also, similar to our other die-cutting methods, Pres-On’s can kiss-cut a variety of thin-gauge materials. Our machines can run material with maximum of 1/4 inches thick. The roll or sheet can be from 1/2 inches to up to 16 inches in width.
Flatbed Die-Cutting
Flatbed die-cutting, also known as stamping or a punch press is a versatile process that can be used to cut complex shapes and intricate details in our adhesive backed products. This method uses a flatbed press with a die board and a flatbed die to precisely cut materials into complex shapes and sizes.
Furthermore, flatbed die-cutting is generally well suited for low volume projects that require consistent cuts, as well as larger sized products. It is great for producing parts with high precision and accuracy, making it a popular choice for producing parts for industrial and commercial applications. Also, the precision and accuracy of flatbed die-cutting can make it a great choice for projects that require precise tolerances and intricate details.
The maximum sizes for Pres-On’s flatbed die-cutting machine are 38 inches to 54 inches.
Label Cutting
Label cutting is the cutting of high temp label stock. Currently, Pres-On only offers high temp label stock that is primarily used by the window and glass industry. Our labels come in two standard sizes: 4″ x 4″ and 4″ x 6″.
Pres-On’s high temp labels are designed to withstand long-term exposure to high temperature processing (autoclave). Our labels are a premium performance, ultra removable, acrylic adhesive coated label stock. Ultra High Temp Labels are compatible with thermal transfer printing processes (100% resin ribbon required) and engineered for optimal adhesion throughout every step of the product supply chain for the glass and window industry.
